Voortrekker Monument weekend

24 June , 2014

Nicola had her heart set on home made pizza on Friday. It was delicious!πŸ™‚

Sunrise on the longest night day…

Big tearful goodbye for Polka when Nicola found out she wasn’t allowed where we were going next.

Mia and Nicola…just outside the Voortrekker Monument.

Getting close to some history…

I took so many photos, but here are some of my favourites. It was awesome seeing everything again – it’s the first time in yeeeeears that I’ve been to the monument. (Also plenty of stairs to chase kids up and down…my poor knees!)

Views from the top!

Not as warm as a camp fire…πŸ˜‰

image

Tapestry – this was in a separate museum the last time I was there, but this time it was in the lower level. Amazing detail…

image

This was new. This bosveld scene is made completely of icing or sugar paste or whatever!

image

Old family bible in the museum.

image

You have to ask yourself why it’s necessary to have these up in the loo?

image

The girls had a lot of fun, although they were not all that impressed with the monument. Oh well, maybe when they’re older?

image

After the million stairs we took a well deserved break in the picnic area.

What a great day!πŸ™‚

On Sunday morning we made some sugar cookies. Nicola gets to pick the cutters, and out of more than 100 that we have, these are the ones she picked.πŸ˜‰

Clowning around. I’m not just saying this cause I’m her mother, but seriously…how stunningly beautiful is my baby?!πŸ˜€

Smooooores!

It’s a slow process this longer day business. It is STILL pitch dark outside at 6:30. *sigh*

  1. Louisa, Nicola is a beautiful girl! And I am not her mother, so no bias here!πŸ˜‰

    • Thank youπŸ™‚

  2. ‘n Moet vir elke kind! Mooi foto’s

    • Baie dankie!

  3. Your daughter is stunning and you know it… I did a whole series on the Voortrekker Monument, probably before you started to follow me… I find it a fascinating place and the whole area has so much for one to see… Our Rhodesian memorial to those shot down in civilian planes by terrorists is also there and something that needs reminding to people is all those that died in South Africa’s own battles… I actually love the place… pity its so expensive to visit otherwise I’d go more often…

    • πŸ˜€ Yes i do!
I didn’t see that series of yours – I’ll have to go and search for it.
It wasn’t that bad – R55 an adult and R30 a child. Obviously i wouldn’t go every weekend, but for a now and then that’s not bad at all.

      • How did you manage that I got stung R75 per adult and even tried the retired thing un successfully…

      • I guess they revised their pricing…I didn’t even have to negotiate. They definitely have a pensioner’s discount now too.

  4. Your baby is stunning β™₯ I haven’t been to the Voortrekker Monument in many years.

    • Thank you!πŸ™‚
This was the first time for me in probably about 15 years or so. I’ve been there a couple of times as a child, and once or twice as an adult. It’s always amazing to see.

  5. have never been – where is it? Pta?

    She is stunningπŸ™‚

And now I want some of those biscuits! Plain sugar biscuits exactly like yours are my favouritesπŸ™‚

Love the homemade pizza – we’ll have to put it on the menu for next week.

    • Yes, it’s in PTA – Eeufees road, you can’t miss it.
Those biscuits were made from a recipe book I had as a little girl…Nicola has obviously laid claim to it because it’s for children, but all the recipes in there are pretty much foolproof.
Die Klein Kook en Geniet. If you want the recipe, give me a shout and I’ll post it.

  6. What a lovely outing. I still need to take my children to the Voortrekker Monument. Love the photos.
Where did you get Nicola’s little doggie?

    • You really should – it’s a grand experience!πŸ™‚
I’ll send you the breeder’s details on a separate email. She charges a lot less than i heard you mention on fb, and I have to say after having Polka for a couple of months now, that they are such an awesome breed. once you have one, you probably won’t want another again.

  7. Ah, A has the Klein Kook en geniet! Always a goof trip to the Voortrekker monument and nice picnic spot. Lots of space to run around for kids. And of course – she is just gorgeous

    • Thank you.πŸ™‚ it was a lovely day out. On 26 Jun 2014 4:01 PM, “123 Blog Myself” wrote:

  9. I’m sad to say I haven’t been even though I drive past at least once a week. It is probably about 15 mins from my house. It looks very grand even from a distance and I have a few pictures.

Nicola is gorgeous and beautiful and her cookie cutter choice had me cracking up. I thought it was bake doggie buscuits day

    • You should do at least once, I think. It’s really amazing.

She’s a real card that Nicola! Haha…this is what happens when you have 101+ cookie cutters, I guess?πŸ˜‰

Say something...come on! You know you want to?
