Week 38 : She’s a Leek!

19 December , 2009

38leekYip…she’s still hanging in there.

Week 38 and Squishy has still not made her move. *sigh* It’s hot as hell here at the moment and all I can say is thank goodness for the swimming pool! I don’t know how people do it without one. As one of my friends said just before her son was born: She now knows why they call it a bun in the oven!

I’m taking it super easy at the moment. My day consists mostly of getting up, having a bath, watching some movies on the laptop, taking a nap, going for a swim, having another nap, watching TV, taking my blood pressure, going to bed…oh and in between having the same conversation a million times with whomever decides to check in with me:

Yes…I’m still pregnant.

I feel BIG, hot and uncomfortable but healthy at least – thanks for asking.

No…I haven’t picked a name yet.

Uhuh…I still have the same shortlist as before.

Of course! I’ll let you know as soon as anything changes.

Don’t get me wrong. I really appreciate that everyone is checking in with me to see that we’re okay – but I think I’d like to talk about the weather right now before I’d want to answer the same questions AGAIN!

Good times! :-D

Yesterday we had a little visit from Sam and her 6 week old daughter Bailey. It was great seeing her again and doing a bit of catching up – although little Bailey was not a happy camper at all! I think it must be the heat or something but she was screaming her bloody head off the whole time. I hope Squishy will be a little bit more sedate once she makes her arrival – for the sake of the Husky’s nerves if for no other reason. Poor dog got very worked up about all the howling and decided to join in (I assume in an effort to calm the baby down or to let her know she’s not alone?). Imagine for a second how popular I will be with my neighbours if I have a screaming baby AND a howling husky all at the same time! (keep in mind that when Diablo howls the windows literally rattle)

Please, please, please let my baby be one of those little calm healthy and happy ones.

Oh, right – before I forget. I want to put a poll up and see what you guys think about this. It’s almost time for Squishy to arrive and I guess now would be a good time to decide whether or not I should let TGC know of her arrival or not. We haven’t heard anything from him since the end of May, I dare say perfect strangers have shown more concern and interest in the development and well-being of this baby than he has. I don’t really think he deserves a special notification…and I’m pretty sure news will reach him in due course through his family who I do plan to let know (since they’ve actually been involved!).

Yeah, f_ck him. I’m not going to let him know. If he wants to be part of this baby’s life he’ll have to crawl out of his hidey hole all by himself. But just for shits and giggles, let’s see what you guys think? Please vote…I may or may not be swayed by an overwhelming majority vote so put some thought into it. ;-)

  1. Heya. Just back from Cape Town with net access again, so rushed over here to ask you all those questions. Thanks for making it less effort for me ;-) We missed our first day on the arrival bet, hey? Bet Sparrow is happy about that! Hope for your sake Squishy arrives before the second date we chose (28th, I think?). Hehehe…

  2. Hmmm. They say men can be pretty weird about impending fatherhood and it’s not unheard of for some to disappear until baby arrives. I’d give him the benefit of the doubt and let him know. That way, if he still doesn’t show any interest, at least you’ll know you gave him the opportunity and your own side of things is clean. And then you can wash your hands of him and get on with raising your baby without any “what if” type thoughts…

  3. She’s not a Leek, she is a baby! Congratulations!

  4. I would say let him know. This will leave you without regrets, don’t expect him to jump for joy now and don’t expect him to want to be involved. Do it for you. Ask the question you need to ask (if you have any) and move on and enjoy your little girl!

  5. Let him know. After that, the ball is in his court. You just be happy with your baby!

  6. One hell of a large leek, hey? 2.2something kg, nearly 3 kg!
    Congrats again, from my side.
He will be part of your life, till eternity, even if just in your sub-conscious mind, everytime you look at little Nicola.
But you can control how this affects your mood.
I would also say: get it out of your system, let him know. and then close the book on how you actually feel about it.
You are 1 of the bravest, most levelheaded, strong women I’ve ever had the privilege to meet. (2nd to Elna, of course!)
Dig down deep in your heart, and find the strength to actually thank him for coming into your life ——- you got a beautiful little Princess as a result.
    God bless.

  7. Mazal tov, Louisa! Look forward to seeing some pics of Nicola and her proud mom.

  8. Napping, watching TV, swimming and hanging out in the sun sounds pretty good right now.

I’ve heard of leeks but I’ve never seen one.

  9. Can’t wait to see pics of baby Nicola!

    Btw – I did vote. :)

  10. Congratulations on the safe delivery of your gorgeous baby girl.

  11. Tamara, hahaha – yeah she made it before your second date. My dad won since he picked the 18th which was the closest to her borthday (19th)! :-)

MeeA, thanks for the advice…that’s exactly what I did. He was a no show (“big” surprise), but as you said – at least i did give him the chance to man up.

Alet, thanks for the advice. You and MeeA had more or less the same point of view on this one. :-)

Sonkind, I did let him know and he missed another chance at being part of a little life which will be truly spectacular (with or without him). In the end it’s his loss. ;-)

Antie Koekie, the little princess eventually made her grand appearance at 2,92kg! A far cry less than the 4 which she was expected at, but she’s healthy and happy and that’s all that matters. :-D Apparently that happens when they have really long legs because that’s what they measure to make the estimation on the weight.

Don’t believe, I’ve managed to put a whole hoard of them up this morning. :-D

JD, you’re kidding?! A leek is one of the only things I’ve been able to recognise in this range so far.

Wenchy, thank friend! I ended up letting him know – but nothing came of it anyway. *shrug* Go have a look at the new post with all the photos on it! :-D

Momcat, thank you so much…must say I am extremely proud. She’s the cutest thing ever to grace this planet with her presence I reckon. :-)

  12. I can’t believe I didn’t comment here!!! I coulda sworn I did…
I am with you on not letting him know. He’s been a real worm and he doesn’t deserve to find out formally.

  13. Angel, does a SMS count as formally? I sent him one, him and his family (who-said-they-wanted-to-be-involved), and they can all kiss my ass now. ;-)
