Lemonade

8 July , 2009

So my (fairly) new job, which I initially though was sooooo super has turned into a bit of a nightmare. Sort of. I mean it great, I love it, and it pays well – when I’m doing it. But when the project goes on hold for whatever reason, it’s a right royal pain in the ass. I get paid per billable hour, so working one week a month is really not cool. (Even though I have enjoyed the extra sleep).

My project has been on hold since the first week in June (un-f-ing-believable). Obviously this distressed me a bit more than it would normally since I now have to budget for two, and also since I vaguely suspect I have 4 months left to save up as much as possible before I go on maternity leave.

Not to whine – but it’s not really like I can just go for another interview at this stage, is it?! But another source of income is definitely something that I need right now. And whilst obsessing about this a bit it finally came to me what I could do. :-D Ideally the thing I needed to do would have to be something that I could do on the side if my project work picked up again, it would also have to be something that I could do from home so that I could carry on with it when I go on maternity leave, and it wouldn’t hurt to have a solid thing set-up that I could run with for extra money when I eventually get round to doing my articles either.

I’m baking – believe it or not. I have a friend whose mom put 6 kids through university on cookies, I can’t see why I can’t keep one baby going with mine.

So the first step of the plan is baking rusks, once I find a workable rhythm on that I’ll add cookies, and then possible later on some frozen dinners – like lasagne. But first the rusks. :-)

I’ve baked my first two batches this week and they both came out beautifully. See here, where they’re busy drying. The first batch was a Buttermilk one and the second one is a Buttermilk-Bran rusk. I am incredibly proud and excited about how this is going.

And wouldn’t you just know it…as soon as I stopped panicking about what to do and got busy doing something my client phones and tells me that they have a new project for me to start on Monday. *does a dance of joy* :-D

This is magnificent news. And the timing leads me to think that the whole point of all the thumb twiddling over the last few weeks was to get me to make this other plan and to be ready (readier anyway) for what’s to come. I’m still going to carry on with it – because really, it’s a near perfect solution and it’s fun to do on top of that. I know now why the ladies from way back when were all so subdued and relaxed, kneading dough will take aaaall the stress out of you – it kicks any stressball’s ass I ever came across that’s for sure.

Win-win situation.

  1. Well done darling!!! Very innovative! My mom also used to bake for a “tuisnywerheid” when we were younger…and she made tons of money with it!

  2. That is so awesome! (your rusks look YUMMY!)

I wish I could find something I like doing and make money out of it. Maybe I’m just too dom :)

    Well done!

  3. rusks. yum. i’d never be able to sell those because I WOULD EAT THEM ALL.

  4. I think I finally need to get ass into gear and bake these rusks! Well done on the achievement! :)

  5. Well I’ll definitely order rusks from you – I love homemade rusks but always cock them up so if I can contract out I’m happy :)

  6. Rusks are the best. J’s mom always makes us a big tin for when we go on holiday so we can have breakfast on the go. I’d definitely pay for those. ;) Homemade is so much better than those Ouma rusks. Just sayin’.

  7. Wow I am impressed with the rusks, glad you’re working again
Where are the pics of you at that fancy dress?

  8. Fantastic! I am impressed with you taking the bull by the horns so to speak.

  9. I always hated billable time. I think it’s because I’m so bursty and I’m really value-based over time-based. I have some real power hours and others aren’t so great.

  10. Ruby, thanks hun. It’s going really well so far! I’m baking looooads and I can hardly keep up – who knew people liked rusks so much?

Acidicice, at the moment you’re probably just very tired all the time. Just hang in there, you’ll feel better soon – and who knows maybe you’ll be able to come up with something that you enjoy doing then? But from the sounds of it you already work very insane hours.

Rebecca, I thought I’d have the same problem. But I bake anywhere between 4 and 7 kilograms a day, you reach a point of saturation I guess? ;-)

Adam, thanks! If you had told me a year ago that I’d be doing this I would never have believed you – but it’s actually a lot of fun. Let me know how your first batch goes?

Benny, anytime. Just let me know how much you want and of which one? At the moment I’m making the Buttermilk one and the Buttermilk-Bran one, soon there will be a Wholewheat-Bran one too but we’re still trying out a few different recipes to get the best one. They go for R30/500gr (If you like rusks a lot I’d recommend go with a Kg instead).

Sleepyjane, I totally agree. If you’re used to home made the store bought Ouma rusks taste a bit like cardboard. My mom always used to make them especially over December when we went on holiday, and we’d have it with coffee for breakfast before heading down to the beach. No fuss, and very little dish washing needed. :-)

Jeanette, trust me I’m also very glad to be working again. Couldn’t have happened at a better time (okay maybe three weeks ago would have been better but then I might never have started the rusks). I put up a special post with all the fancy dress piccies just for you. If you’re wondering why I look a little tense in that photo it’s because we were having some camera issues and I was already late!

Angel, thank you. :-) A girl’s got to do, what a girl’s got to do, right?

JD, I fully agree with you. But this is the way they do it – and it’s not my company, so I get to play along or leave I guess. If you want to look on the bright side though, I do get to charge them for attending meetings.

  11. always good to have a backup plan – the rusks look yummy

  12. Pinkhairgirl, agreed. That old adage about eggs in one basket and so on? ;-) Thank you, I am very happy with how they came out.
