Not your every day melktert

melktert-southafricanfood

Melktert (milk tart) is a South African classic. It’s not something that I like very much, even though my mom apparently makes the best one ever (sorry mom!). This is more or less how you make a classic Melktert.

That’s not the kind of melktert we had yesterday. This one is not so new I’m told, but it was the first time I’ve had it – so I thought I’d share it with you anyway. It’s uncanny how much it tastes like the classic melktert (only with teeth!). We were doing a little test run for a theme party we’re having in Pretoria this weekend. It’ll work. It’ll work very well actually. :-D

Melktertjies

Here’s how you make this kind of melktertjies:

Ingredients:

  • One can of ideal milk
  • One or maybe 1,5 cans of condensed milk depending how sweet you like it
  • Enough Vodka to fill up the bottle

How to:

  • Pour all the ingredients in a vodka bottle
  • Shake well
  • Stick in the freezer until you feel like having it, it won’t go solid don’t worry
  • Pour into shooter glasses and sprinkle with ground cinnamon

Word of caution, just because it tastes like a desert doesn’t mean it doesn’t still kick like a donkey. Handle with care and so on. ;-)

I’m still more of a chocolate fan…

  1. i just had to wipe the drool off my desk.. how did you know I have been craving melktert??

  2. I’m psychic like that B. ;-) If you like melktert then you absolutely have to try this.

  3. Mmm mmm mmm! I love milktart, lots and lots of it! Those little things look darn good, I’ll give it a bash :)

  4. You won’t be sorry Chris. :-) Let me know what you think of it when you do? (Annelie, who made these says it’s best to go a bit heavy with the condensed milk).

  5. Oh my… looks so good! I reckon you have made a new shooter: “Melk Tert Surprise”; “Oumas Skop”; “Ouma’s se tanne”… ha ha ha! Will have to try it sometime ;-)

  6. Hans, I really can’t take the credit for this one. It’s been doing the rounds. I read about it on a news group and both my brother and cousin both said that they’ve had plenty of it before…so definitely not brand new.

It’s different. You should try it, get someone to do the shaking for you while your arm’s broken ‘kay? ;-)

  7. That sounds friggin awesome … I may have to go home and make some to stock our freezer ;) Aside from the fact that Varen HATES cinnamon … More for me!

  8. Phillygirl, he doesn’t like cinnamon? :-| What’s that other thing he doesn’t like, coriander isn’t it? Well, I hope you enjoy it. :-D

  9. I’ve tasted this before and it is YUM!

  10. Benny, I agree – and I don’t even like normal milk tart.

  11. Wow – this is so my type of desert – not to mention the type of ‘baking’ that makes my heart sing!

  12. now, that is my idea of a melktert.

  13. It sounds wonderful. All my favourite things: vodka, condensed milk and cinnamon. How can it not be nice? But I bet it gives a really bad hangover! You will have to let us know!

  14. Those pictures look worth a 1000 words. It seems like some things you can just drink with your eyes.

  15. DT, aaah yes – definitely my kind of baking too. :-)

    Rebecca, you must try it!

Michelle, I’ve heard it can do that but I can’t really say because I don’t get hangovers from anything except red wine. :-P

JD, you should try the drinking with the mouth bit too. ;-)

  16. Damn, those both sound heavenly. Curse you!! Now I MUST get some.

  17. Don’t Believe, can you ever forgive me?

  18. mmmmmm …. as jy my nie die volgende paar dae sien nie, ek is besig met my melktert sussie!

Ps! Ek weet ek skuld jou nog bonsai fotos, moenie dink ek het vergeet nie.

  20. Brilliant!! I can imagine what kick that has!

  21. Jenty, it really has quite a kick but you don’t notice it. Beware ;-)

  22. Oh my lawdy that sounds divine!!!

  23. It really is, and not very sweet if you keep in mind how much condensed milk goes into it.

  24. Hi. I’m an Aussie in London and had this at a Saffa pub in Putney. It was great. Someone showed me your page here and I tried recreating it. It worked well, except that it did freeze (not rock hard, but similar to soft ice-cream, so that it won’t pour).

Maybe my measurements are off; could you provide more detail? How big is the vodka bottle and the tins. Or do you know how much vodka, using the milk can as a reference (i.e. half a tin or 1 tin)? And just to confirm, Ideal milk is evaporated milk right? Yours (and the one I had) look quite white, but the evap and condensed milk both seem very yellow so my end result is very yellow too. Is your Ideal milk yellow?

http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com/biscuits/previous.php3?item=104 You inspired me to create my own Iced Vovo cocktail, based on the Arnott’s biscuit that I’ve always cherished. It’s coming along nicely, but I have yet to invite friends over to try it.

  25. Hi Nato! It froze?! Sorry about that – it’s not meant to do that at all. I’ve had a look in the bar and pantry cupboards and the standard SA measurements for these items are:

    Vodka – 750ml bottle
Condensed Milk – 385gr (this is usually a cream colour, definitely not yellow)
Evoparted (Ideal) Milk – 380gr (also white to cream colour, not yellow. The one we have here is by Nestle’ – not sure if that helps at all?).

I had a look at the Iced Vovo biscuits. I have never seen anything like it round here, it almost looks like coconut ice on top with that rasberry jam. From the sounds of the post it sounds more like some sort of marshmallow icing of sorts. If it ever manages to travel to SA I’ll definitely try some.

How did you make this into a cocktail? (I’m not allowed any cocktails till at least January, but it’s always nice to have a few recipes to try out when the dry spell ends, right?) ;-)

Ps! If you can’t get the Melktertjies not to freeze, maybe keep it in the fridge instead of the freezer and drink it faster?

  26. thanks my china i had this two weeks ago when i was in cpt at least now i know how to make it thanks a lot water is running out of my mouth already to have a terjie thx allot

  27. jacques, glad I could help! :-)

  28. Hi Louisa it seem`s there is a problem, mine also froze, maybe more vodca is needed and say half of ideal milk?

  29. Andre, that sucks! Please try it and let us all know? Sorry, it’s not supposed to do that.
