Pandora’s Post Box
8 January , 2009In keeping with my current view of things namely, no news is good news, I haven’t collected my post since about middle of June last year. I don’t lose much sleep over it either since the majority of it’s bad news, bills and bitching letters about previous bills anyway…you see I have cleverly devised a system where bad news goes to my post box and good news comes to my inbox. Bravo me!
However, I finally had to crack and go empty it. Somewhere between those sinister envelopes lies the renewal notification for my bad news box. Yes…indeed. Another bill. There’s also the small matter of a deadline before they allocate my box to someone else trying to escape their mail, so I really didn’t have that much of a choice.
What I found when I opened my post box:
- The renewal (Whoohooo! And just in the nick of time too. Crisis averted box has been renewed and mail is kept at a safe distance once more).
- Lots and lots of bank statements and bills, as expected (I think there would have been more but the box was crammed full already)
- Half a post box full of printed spam (this does not bug me much, I throw it back in there for the postal people to take care of and redistribute)
- An invitation to get another credit card (Seriously?! Who in their right mind would think me a likely candidate for one of those right now?)
- Belated birthday and Christmas wishes from Captain Morgan (I filled out a little form in a queue once declaring myself a fan, I get regular updates from the Captain on suitable adventures for rum&fun-loving free spirits, it’s lovely – almost makes me want to actually drink rum).
- A Dulce’ Voucher from TooMuchCoffee in response to an email I sent yonks ago. That actually made my day. Thank you so much Addict!
This is just what I needed…Saturday is TooMuchCoffee day – I can’t wait!
I kept the good ones, and ran the rest promptly through the shredder at work. A cleansing experience really. I might go fetch the mail more often in future…then again, I might not.
The rest of my day sucked. In no uncertain terms…SUUUUUUUUUUUCKED! Oh well, not every single day can be brilliant I guess. Tomorrow will most definitely be better. It is a sad day when emptying the bad news box is the upside. Meh…I’m glad it’s over.

Uuugh – you reminded me of my bills.
I still do them the old fashioned, snail-mail way.
Does the shredder work well for bills?
It doesn’t get them paid, if that’s what you mean
But it sure makes them look prettier.
I really enjoy the shredder, there is something so comforting in the sound of tearing paper…
that is a brilliant idea, we only get spam crap too.
Knowing it’s chomping it’s way through my unwanted mail makes it almost purrrrfect. Our shredder at work is nick-named Hamster – because it tends to gather paper in it’s “cheeks”. Every now and then it get’s completely blocked up and then someone has to man-handle it with a pair of tweezers or scissors to get it chewing again. (That someone is normally me by the way).
But today it did none of that, just chewed it all up like a good little hamster.
Po, I highly recommend it. I’ve had this box now for the last 12 years (good grief, has it really been that long already?!). It comes in very handy.
When I moved to Cape Town I left it in the care of my brother with some money to forward mail to me. But I flew up so regularly that I ended up picking up the mail every few months myself anyway.
It’s not a little ironic that I got my mail more regularly when I was on the other side of the country than now when i live practically 5 minutes away from the box.
Oh you clever child, I must try this!
Thank you, thank you
*takes a bow*
My mother is very proud…
May your day only get better
Thanks DT, it was much better.
i receive very few snail mail items- and i check it regularly just in case there’s a parcel collection slip!
If I was expecting something like that I would also check it regularly.
