The big scuttle begins…
26 November , 2007Good grief! What a chaotic weekend. I’m not sure if I can do a whole month of this to myself.
The crazy weekend kicked off with a Mystery Bus Tour of Johannesburg with Freddy, Sarah, Adam and a few of their friends. What’s supposed to happen is that they take you on a 10 stop ghost story tour and tell you all about all the spooky stuff. What happened in reality was only four stops (of which two were pubs at least), and a tour guide with a morbid fascination with Daisy de Melker. If the woman (Daisy, not the guide) worked, lived, killed or died somewhere we heard about it.
Busses make me very lazy…I guess I just associate them with long road trips, because I couldn’t keep my eyes open! It was supposed to be freaking out on ghost stories and meanwhile I was drooling on my own shoulder in la-la-land.
The last two stops were cool. The second last one we went to Emerentia dam and were each given two pieces of L-shaped wire to hold in a certain way. When you walk towards the water the wires swing close and almost seem to come at your throat, and when you turn around and walk away the swing open again. Hehehe…very funny. The tour guide also waffled on about ley lines, but I couldn’t quite make the connection to the water and the wires.
The last stop was the Braamfontein Cemetry. I can now also check that off on my list of things that I’ve done. Prancing round a cemetry after midnight on a full (well almost) moon. It was surprisingly un-creepy.

I only got home at about 3:00 and you can imagine how thrilled I was when my dad woke me up at 07:00 to invite me along to Thabazimbi for the day to go visit my grandma. I was bribed into getting up and tagging along with coffee and promises of more coffee.
We literally drove all the way to my gran’s house, had tea, tinkered with her swimming pool, and drove all the way back to be home by 17:00 so I could scuttle off to the next event. It was nice to see my gran – and she’s already told me that I better start saving up so I can fly her down for a weekend to CT to come visit. Sweet…
The next event was a braai at Wanette’s house which initially was going to be a farewell for Henning and Tanja who are emigrating to Australia at the end of the year. However, there was some confusion, misunderstandings and conflicts in diaries – so they couldn’t make it! The next farewell for them will be on the 14th of December now, and this one turned out to be a normal not farewell braai instead. I volunteered to bring desert for everyone and it looked like the ice cream and Bar-one chocolate sauce was a crowd pleaser at least. Low maintenance – got to love it.
Today, I would have like nothing more than to stay in bed all day long. But, I “cleverly” decided to host a “so-what-are-you-doing-this-weekend”-braai instead. The way it works is that every person who asked me that question got invited. It was nice – but I’m just so tired now. The weekend is OVER already and I had not a minute to myself since the start of it. Also I have a cracking head ache because I may have underestimated the decibel levels that 6 kids could reach while playing in a pool. Oh my word but they are shrill! My ears are still ringing…
In between all this I’ve still been trying to get my car fixed, my move organised (buying boxes and renting a trailer), and trying to get round to telling everyone I’m leaving, saying goodbye to everyone, buying a sleeper couch for visitors who will already start arriving the day that I do, worrying about my cat who has stopped eating (I’m taking her to the vet first thing tomorrow), thinking up the best ways to move a bonsai collection (I think there will be wrapping involved), working out my notice at work, drinking vast amounts of coffee and selling Christmas Cards for the kids of the Goedgedact Trust too.
Busy – Sheesh!
Whooohooo! I’m moving to Cape Town in one month exactly today…ready or not, here I come.

Sounds like you had an interesting weekend. At least I now know where you’ve been! I’m glad though – you should spend as much time with your friends as you can, while you can.
Daisy de Melker, huh? I’ve heard that name before, never knew the story. Looking at the Wiki entry – she definitely wasn’t a pretty soul. I wonder though, did she do it? *ominous dum, dum, duuuuum music* One way or the other – she doesn’t seem the type to have tied herself down.
I hope that Tiggy is alright. My fingers are crossed and I’m keeping her in my thoughts. Keep us informed.
Can’t wait to have you back here
I’m already dreading the moving of the fridge and bed – eep. That’s going to be a pain in the ass… and spine… Eep!
It’s the final count-down
one month and counting, lucky you!!!
Lycan: That Daisy sure was a less-than-pretty woman! One wonders how exactly she managed to get married no less than twice in any case. Wiki didn’t mention it but our tour guys hinted that she might have actually done in a faince’ or two as well before the two husbands.
Tiggy is feeling much better today. I took her to the vet and he diagnosed her with a bacterial infection that was giving her cramps. After some antibiotics and armed with some special sick kitty food she is now looking much better. I just have to take her back tonight for one more injection and then she’ll be A-okay again. I am so relieved – I was so worried that it would be more serious. Love that kitty…I’d bawl my eyes out if something happened to her.
Don’t remind me about the heavy lifting! Oh my word, actually now that I think about it: I swore the last time I moved (when I privatised) that I wouldn’t do it again unless I could afford to pay someone to do it for me! So much for good intentions huh?
Better get me the number of a good physio in the area…
Stef: Uh huh uh huh! I am soo excited. Can’t wait to start my new adventure.

so were you really sleepy initially, or was it that boring?
It’s probably a combination of the two angel – although the other people in the bus assured me that they were just as bored.
