Kuai Kwaai Braai

14 October , 2007

Copy of plumeria - frangipani

Saturday was the third birthday party of the Afrikaans “news”-group that I am a member of - Kwaaiplaas. Officially the group has its Birthday on the 19th of October but every year we have it on a Saturday in October that suits the most people. It’s become tradition to have a themed party and this year we had a Hawaiian party. A & myself “regularly” attend (and sometimes even work out at) one of the Virgin Active Gyms, and that’s where we were inspired after enjoying a post-squash smoothy at Kauai. (I just misspelt it on the invites and that’s how it became Kuai Kwaai). ;-)

Everyone was instructed to dress tropical and we had a cocktail making station set-up with almost anything you could think of. Every person got lei-ed at the door, and drinks were enjoyed in hollowed out pineapples through whistling straws. Teams of two were sent to make cocktails and name them. Some of the best ones of the day were the Seahorse, Pina Colada ala Marrrizca, Three Rum Fruit Salad, Cranberry Snow Cone, and Something Red. No recipes sorry, it’s secret (that or hard to remember how many dashes of this and glug-glugs of that you added?)

We swam, we ate, we drank, we laughed our asses off! Good fun…can’t wait for the next one. :-D

Oh yes, and before I forget…we have another tradition. We have a singing candle. Just one of those normal ones that you can buy at a stationer or gift card shop usually. It sings “Happy Birthday to You” and we’ve been using it since the first party. We let it sing once…and only once…and we have made the commitment to carry on having these birthday parties until the candle burns out or the batteries run out. I am the custodian of the birthday candle…and I can tell you it will never stop - nuff said. ;-)

I don’t have all the photos yet, but here are a few so long and I might come back and add some more later in the week.

Aloha! and so on…hope you have the best week ever.
