Yesterday – first day at my shiny new job

8 June , 2007

1The tale of my first day back at (a) work:

The day got off to a good start with me leaving home only 5 minutes after my initial planned time of 6:30. I only start at 8:00, which is weird in itself for me since I have only ever worked at places that start at 7:00. It’s not very far from my home, but I wasn’t sure what the traffic looked like and I didn’t want to be late on my very first day there. Unfortunately I was given dodgy directions with extra “turn left at the first road” and “right at the T-junction” which didn’t exist. But at 7:00 I turned round and started again with a fresh set of directions. Even so I breezed in comfortably at 7:50 although there are a few other motorists who’s ears must still be burning (also, my apologies to your ancestors – but if you want to drive 20km/h on an open road then maybe the city is not for you, see?).

Trying to look like I knew where I was going I managed to make my way an open plan office where I encountered the first of my new colleagues. What a miserable woman…honestly. I mentioned previously that I had decided to dress up for the occasion (to fit in Hahahaha!), so imagine my surprise when I came across this creature in a track suit. Oh well, whatever works for you I say. I thought I’d be nice and offer some help while I waited for new the new boss to come and tell me what I need to do, but this only led tracksuit-colleague to mush her hair and start mumbling incoherently about last week’s time sheets and a load of other shite. Fine fine…I will endeavor to find the kitchen instead for my caffeine fix.

When new-boss finally came in (at about 9:00 – it’s good to be the king), I found out that I would be helping out with the accounts from 8:00 till 12:30, and then sit on the switch board from 12:30 until 16:30. Spent the morning getting trained, and the afternoon reading while answering the phone in between (I thought it best to be prepared since she was so concerned about me being bored there). I’ve asked if they would mind if I study while answering the phone and everyone seems okay with it, so essentially it’s a half day job.

On a little side note – some handy tips for phone users in general:

  • Take the damn phone out of your mouth when speaking…don’t say mumble mumble-mumble-slurrrrp and expect me to realize that’s your special way of saying Lawrence.
  • If you phone the same number 10 or 12 times a day you don’t have to ask me EVERY SINGLE TIME how I’m doing, there are 10 lines to answer after all and Murphy’s law they all start ringing at the exact moment you get through after being dead quiet for the last hour!
  • I’m not allowed to tell you when someone has taken their phone of the hook, so if I keep offering to take a message – take me up on my offer instead of letting me buzz a dead line with your call forever because you feel it shows commitment.
  • I aint your honey, sweety, lovey, angel, skattie or whatever, I know when I get to that stage of familiarity with someone and answering your call doesn’t quite crack it.

Aside from that, I really did have a nice first day. We have a bar on the premises – I might just swing by and have a look-see what that’s all about tomorrow. :-)

I was right about the internet access unfortunately. Definitely not happening in the afternoons, but I might just be on-line in the mornings from next week or so, still waiting to see… Hope you all have a kick-@ss weekend!

  1. Again with the “bar on premises” and corporate allowance. . . I seriously have to look into relocating to SA. You have a rockstar weekend too, sweetie. Oops, does being a blog stalker entitle me that much familiarity ;-)
